At a packed public meeting in Bottesford Village hall last week, people spoke for and against the proposal to erect 8 wind turbines (taller than Belvoir castle) up the hill at the other side of the railway line at Bottesford. The growing health concerns were highlighted - these concerns need to be taken very seriously because there will be an estimated 500 residents, and also people working at the Normanton Lane Industrial Estate and of course the children at Lara House nursery, who will all be "dangerously " close to these structures. The developers have ignored the official safety guideline of siting these turbines a minimum 2km away from people. The reason why the turbines need to be at least 2km away from people is that they emit low frequency noise (day and night) and the frequency of this noise is such that it can seriously affect people's health.
It’s scare mongering. Nobody has ever been able to show credible evidence that wind turbines are bad for your health. They said this about pylons and GSM masts, TV’s & radios and even mobile phones were supposed to fry our brains and when the train was invented, we would suffocate due to the speed. People are too scared of progress and something new.
I would be around 1 KM from the proposed turbines and I don’t mind. They have high ground between them and the houses. That side of the Beacon is hardly an area of outstanding natural beauty with all of the pylons, farm buildings, old hangers and industrial areas.
If these turbines were located 20 miles north, adjacent to some other village this forum wouldnt be having this debate about the other villagers health because its 'Not In My Back Yard'.
What people are actually objecting against is that things have to change quickly and they dont like that, and if that means we look at wind turbines, which collectivley with other forms of sustainable energy will make things better for people other than ourselves then so be it.
But as these turbines will have some impact on our own lives then people feel they must selfishly make whatever objections they can possibly think of to prevent change affecting their own lives.
Change is good, when I went to school (all them years ago) there was only one BBC Computor in the whole school, now almost every house has at least 1, every child these days will not know life without one and quite possibly in the future it will be a computor that is responsible for saving our life or killing us. But we still use them.
The other option is that in 50 years we can live in the coastal town of Bottesford which is a popular destination for UK holiday makers, with its good road and rail links, super casinos, regular day trips accros the sea to the isle of Belvoir to visit the castle and finally we could become the new stag & hen party capital of the UK.
I think i would prefer the quiet rural inland village with a few wind turbines.
The real issue with wind turbines is the noise, they do cause a problem if you are close. The European recommended distance is a minimum of 2km. There is much research just being published on the health effects of the noise - and if you do not want to wait to see it, then just do a search for wind turbines and Deeping St Nicolas. A family has had to move home because of being less than a kilometre from a turbine. If the turbines were 20 miles away then there would be no cause to protest - it is the fact that they are less than 2km that is the real issue.
Wind power alone will not prevent man-made climate change, though it will certainly help. The problem is that the UK is a very crowded place and finding somewhere on land that is windy and more than 2km from habitation is hard. That is why off-shore wind power is so popular.
Incidently, there is published evidence that mobile phones do heat the brain (they use microwaves) - hence the government recommendation the children under 12 do not use them (they have thin skulls). In France they are actually banned from being used by children.
